The Berlin Thunder fell to the Stallions 25-9 in their first preseason game of the 2043 season on August 15. Playing at home under head coach Carl Cottle, the Thunder struggled to score touchdowns and were limited to three field goals by kicker Michael Barrett, who made three of four attempts.
The Stallions took an early lead with a 43-yard field goal by Ruben Moore at 0:44 of the first quarter. Moore proved reliable throughout the game, finishing 4-for-4 on field goals with distances of 33, 51, and a critical extra point following a Stallions touchdown.
Berlin's offense managed 193 passing yards on 20 completions from 28 attempts and added 52 rushing yards on 25 carries but failed to reach the end zone. The Thunder offense also faced setbacks, including an interception thrown by quarterback Mitchell Snow and several punts that pinned the team deep in their territory.
The defensive unit secured a key fumble recovery when James Jimenez fumbled a kickoff return late in the first quarter, recovered by Roy Hogan, but could not convert turnovers into points. The Thunder defense recorded two sacks and one fumble recovery, while the Stallions defense added a forced fumble and interception.
The Stallions extended their lead in the second quarter with two field goals and a touchdown in the fourth quarter. The touchdown came on a 25-yard pass from Mitchell Snow to Kenneth Sanders, who also contributed a rushing touchdown earlier. Total Stallions rushing yards reached 98, with Tracy Nieves accounting for 35 yards and a receiving touchdown.
Special teams played a significant role throughout the game. Thunder punter Ralph Judd consistently changed field position with several long punts. However, Stallions kicker Ruben Moore's successful field goals and extra point ultimately made a decisive difference.
The Thunder are now 0-1 in preseason and will look to improve their red zone efficiency and scoring ability in upcoming games. Coach Carl Cottle will likely evaluate adjustments after a game where the offense managed a solid yardage total but lacked red zone success, with no touchdowns recorded. The Stallions held edge in scoring opportunities and capitalized effectively.
The pre-season opener highlighted areas of strength and those needing refinement for the Thunder as they prepare for the regular season.
