I have reduced the number of future years available to 4 instead of 5, although draft picks that have already been available will continue to be so (so at the end of the current seasons there will be no additional picks added until the following season).

Ok, step in the right direction.
But there is still the chance that it's still open to abuse. There is nothing to stop someone from trading all their top picks, (maybe as a favor) and then leaving the team at the seasons end only for the next owner to sort out.

I've fallen into this trap and would 100% never again take on a gutted team again. If this happens I would like to see restrictions imposed on that owner(s) if that's possible.

At the end of the day we play this fun and there should be a degree of etiquette which at times seems lacking.

I think the changes made to the balance bar will decrease the chances that an owner can "dump" all their top picks for unequal value. As long as they get good value for them, I don't care.

I don't want to take away the ability to trade your top picks if you feel it's the best way to improve your team. I for one, would be willing to part with my picks for good young players considering the type of quality I've seen in the drafts.

I've noticed many teams that don't have very many high draft picks left, but they have a roster stocked with 90+ players due to trades they've made.

It seems like they were in a "win now" mode, which is perfectly fine with me.

I don't want to take away the ability to mortgage the future for a chance to win now. Real teams do it all the time.

Another idea is to warn new owners about checking out the team's roster and remaining picks BEFORE they "become owner". Maybe when a new user signs up they can get a message with a list of bullet points they need to be aware of. Such as: read the guide / message boards, check out your potential team's roster/picks, etc.

Maybe a better idea is another forum specifically for new users. Something like "New Users Start Here", with certain topics stickied to the top.

In rl the owners have a downside if the gamble doesn't pay off. In online games they can just walk away leaving a poor team which nobody will want.

First bold: Yeah, there are a number of ways to build your team and the ability to do it by trading top picks should exist as its a legit way of doing it, nothing wrong with that.

Second bold: I like the way that when you own a new team that site admin automatically puts a notice in the forum, maybe a copy and paste welcome note with as you as a few 'do's and don'ts' in it would help out.

There are always going to be owners who walk away. And you can have all your picks and still have a poor team. My team in MFN6 is awful and I have a ton of picks.

I think this whole debate is centered around picks, which are way over valued unless they are top 5. You can usually get better value in free agency than a late first rounder.

If a new owner takes over a team that is missing a first round pick, but has an extra 80+ player on the roster, in most cases I'd call it even.

I think it just doesn't "look right" to some, especially new owners, but once you've been through a few drafts you realize those (late) 1st round picks aren't nearly as valuable as you think.

Sure they'll always be folks who zip in and out, but they should know what they're getting into, and unfortunately that tends to happen after you've signed up for your team and get to know the lay of the land.

Picks and their value is real a matter of opinion, some drafts are stronger than others. Cust-12 is firing now and there is still real value all the way through to the 46th.
If a new owner takes over a team and then finds out they have no picks in the first 3 rounds for the next 4 seasons, how do you think they will feel? What do you think happens?

What concerns me most in this whole debate is that there has been some highly questionable multiple trades of future seasons where owner on their way out have dealt top players and/or top picks leaving a fairly gutted team, and its not restricted to be a one off thing either.

There are just some folks in life that want to win at all costs and don't mind how they do it, sadly.

They shouldn't take over a team until they have reviewed it, which is why I recommend advising them to do so when they sign up.

No picks in the first 3 rounds for 4 seasons seems a little extreme, but I guess it would depend on the roster of that team.

You can't compare an allocation draft to a regular draft. They're completely different animals.

I think the new balance bar will prevent this. There will have to be relatively equal value in return.

I guess you could trade your first round picks for a 12 year 99 rated player, and then he retires so next year the team is considered "gutted".

The goal isn't 8-8 :).

In all seriousness, the issue (in my opinion) isn't the trades, because there are valid reasons for most of them, and seriously bad trades won't be allowed anymore.

The issue seems to be owners not renewing for new seasons, and then new owners taking over a team without reviewing it first.

When I started this topic it was the amount of trades that set me off. I still dont think trading a 4th,5th,6th,7th round pick for a 1st or a 2nd is good trading. However if it was just 1 trade I probably wouldnt have minded it. My problem was these same trades were done for up to 5 seasons in advance and on multiple leagues. You cant sell me your rebuilding by trading away all your 1st and 2nd round picks for seasons you havnt reached yet. That was my main issue. To me that was unfair for the rest of us and from my understanding one of the owners agreed to reverse them but the other didnt, of course it was the owner who benefited from the trades. But hey, I am just full of hot air.

Hopefully with the way trades are now we wont have that problem anymore but it still doesnt make up for the fact that someone can make those trades and decide to leave the league.

Easy to say a new owner should do this and do that, I know some quite savvy people that play this and have got caught out....what is it about hindsight???

Yeah its not about finishing 8-8 and its not about trying to bend the rules either.
