3-3-NYM 30 (12:22) 8-Robert Asher pass complete to 88-David Rogge to NYM 20 for 11 yards. Pushed out of bounds by 41-Gus Berridge. PENALTY - Holding (DTT 18-Antonio Williams)

3-3-NYM 30 (12:15) 8-Robert Asher pass complete to 10-James Flores to NYM 12 for 18 yards. Tackle by 43-John Cunningham.

Despite the hold, no pen given and then 3rd and 3 was run again instead of 3rd and 13.

Why would a time out be called here please?

Really odd play calling with 8:48 still on the clock in the 1st qtr.

I had this happen before as well. The hold happened well down field ahead of the play so it was 10 yards from spot of foul. I guess that is actually the right call but I cant recall ever seeing it happen in an NFL game.

Is it the spot of the foul? I always thought it was from the LOS??? If that play had gone for say 20 yards and the foul occurred then the 10 yrd pen wouldn't make any difference.

Don't mind losing so much, but when stuff like this happens its a wee bit frustrating

I actually saw this called in the playoffs this year - caught my attention because it has been brought up a few times here. The reason we don't "see" it called is because it's hardly noticeable in the game when you're just casually watching it; the play was catch and run and the holding occurred on the 1 yard line. The ball was spotted at the 11 and I think it was even a first down. The announcers explained it in passing but if you weren't paying attention for it you wouldn't have noticed it.

lol..dont bother me, we have the ring ;) Actually tho the Pats were the second most penalized team in the league compared to Seattle and if you want to go all the way back to spygate they are one of the least fined teams for rules violations

If the play went for 20 (or 50), but the penalty was 10 yards downfield, it would have been marked off from the spot of the foul (10 yards downfield). It doesn't matter how long the play would have gone for. The penalty is always marked off from the spot of the foul, unless it was behind the line of scrimmage. In that case, it is marked off from the line of scrimmage.

You see similar things all the time on kick/punt returns in the NFL.
